THE RELATIONSHIP OF ECOLOGICAL FACTORS TO THE NUTRIENT INTAKE OF ELDERLY IN PYONGTAEK AREA

Abstract
The relationship of ecological factors to the dietary intakes of 166 elderly aged 65 years and over (53male, il3female) in Pygag-taek area. The ecological data was obtained by interview using questionnaires and dietary survey was done by 24-hour recall method and interview during the June 10 to July 10, 1986.
Most (9176) of the subjects lived with their children and 72% did not graduate from elementary school and 9% graduated from middle school. About one-fifth of the subjects had body weights below 90% of the standards (male 21%, female 25%), while obesity rate was low (male 4%, female 12%).
The average intakes of all nutrients except protein, calcium and vitamin A were sufficient compared to RDA. The 24.5/31.9(male/female) %, 37.7/59.3% and 54.7/47.8% of the subjects took protein, calcium and vitamin A below two-third of RDA. Male had higher intakes of calcium (p. <05), iron (p<. 01), riboflavin (p<. 05) and niacin (p<. 05) than female.
Ecological factors showed significant correlations with nutrient, intakes to some degree (r= 156~410). The male subjects¢¥ nutrient intakes were positively influenced by socioeconomic status such as pocket money and education level, while female were positively influenced by psychological factors including self-consciousness of health. Self-consciousness of health were depended.. on several physiological conditions. Among ¢¥the physiological factors, task outside home and meal regularity influenced positively on the nutrient intakes of the male, whereas female were particularly influenced by meal regularity, appetite, snacking frequency and sleeping inconvenience.
